We have all read many articles about the possible career choices of a scientist. The usual dilemma is between industry and academia. We have talked about this in previous blogs but the more information we get the easier it is to make a wise choice. Donald Metcalf Award Winner - Emmanuelle Passegué The 2024 Donald Metcalf Award goes to Dr. Emmanuelle Passegué for her outstanding work in the fields of normal and malignant hematopoietic stem cell biology. Dr. Passegué, Alumni Professor of Genetics & Development and Director of the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative (CSCI) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York city, receives the highest honor bestowed by the Society for her distinguished work as an outstanding scientist, leader, and role model.  Dr. Passegué grew up in France, and after PhD studies at the Collège de France in Paris she went on to postdoctoral research, first with Dr. Erwin Wagner at the Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna and with Dr. Irv. Get to know groups doing cutting edge research from around the world! This month, we are featuring the Vanuytsel Lab which is based out of the Center for Regenerative Medicine, Boston University. How long has your lab been open and who is in your lab currently? The lab opened in July 2023 and currently consists of a lab manager, a PhD student, a postdoc and three undergraduate researchers. What is the overarching research goal for your group? Our lab studies concepts at the intersection of hematopoietic development, stem cell biology and sickle cell disease.
